“O homem forte, todo o mundo tem por pátria”: a construção do homem mundanus em Antônio Vieira

Resumo

Antônio Vieira é uma das notáveis figuras da história e cultura lusitana. Envolvido em grandes polêmicas, o audacioso jesuíta é amplamente conhecido pela defesa e apologia do império português, atestando isso em diversas documentações, tais como cartas, sermões e textos proféticos. Para fundar sua exegese, o engenhoso padre seiscentista construiu sobre a figura bíblica de Tubal o ideal de homem português. Para o jesuíta, a natureza desbravadora
e indômita do povo português é resultado de uma herança que se origina em Tubal e aflora intensamente no processo de expansão marítima portuguesa. Homem de todo o mundo, o homem mundanus vieiriano tem por pátria toda a extensão do globo, fundamentando a noção de Império presente nas profecias do padre seiscentista. T omando tal discussão por tema, a sequência argumentativa deste trabalho segue em duas correntes: compreender a construção dos conceitos de homem e mundo vieiriano e sua relação com a tradição profética portuguesa.

ABSTRACT: Antonio Vieira is one of the outstanding figures in the history and Lusitanian culture. Involved in major controversy, the audacious Jesuit is widely known for defense and apology of the Portuguese empire, stating that in several documentation, such as letters, sermons and prophetic texts. To found his exegesis, the ingenious seventeenth-century priest built on the biblical figure of Tubal the ideal of Portuguese man. For the Jesuit, the taming nature and indomitable of the Portuguese people is the result of a heritage that originates from Tubal and emerges strongly in the Portuguese maritime expansion process. Man of the world, man Mundanus vieiriano has the country the entire length of the globe, basing the concept of Empire in the prophecies of the seventeenth-century priest. Taking this discussion by topic, the argumentative sequence this work follows two perspectives: to understand the construction of human concepts and vieiriano world and their relation with the Portuguese prophetic tradition.
